ATS to probe links between Purohit and Thane blasts accused

Mumbai, Nov 11 (PTI) The ATS will be probing links between arrested army officer Lt Col Purohit and six persons arrested for their involvement in carrying out blasts in Thane and Mumbai to protest against the staging of the play deemed offensive to Hindu sentiments.
Purohit, presently in police custody till November 15 for his role in the September 29 Malegaon blast, is likely to be probed for his links with the arrested activists from Hindu groups Hindu Janjagruti Samiti and Sanatan Sanstha.

Investigators will look into whether the army officer had any links with one of the accused Hemant Chalke, a homeopath and one of the accused in carrying out the blasts at theatres in Thane and Vashi in Navi Mumbai.

The ATS has filed its chargesheet against the six accused in the theatre blasts case and had said two members of the group had assembled crude bombs at the ashram of the Sanatan Sanstha which they then placed at the auditoriums.

The CBI is also looking at the possibility of the involvement of those arrested in the Malegaon case with the 2006 Nanded blast case in which four alleged Bajrang Dal activists were killed while assembling a bomb.

One of the accused in the Malegaon case, Rakesh Dhawade, has already been taken into custody by the Aurangabad ATS for his suspected involvement in the Nanded blast and the 2004 blast in Jalna.

Investigators said they had evidence against Dhawade, a Pune based gun expert, being involved in a weapons training camp prior to the Jalna blast and needed to interrogate him in that context. PTI
